In July 2016, UK Detailing Academy opened its doors as a stand-alone training academy with a fairly simple idea: car detailing training should be taught by people who had actually made a living doing it. Ten years on, that idea hasn’t changed. Almost everything around it has.
This month marks a decade of UKDA – ten years of teaching detailing as a profession rather than a pastime, from our training centre in Gloucestershire to workshops, dealerships, valeting operations and aviation hangars across the UK and beyond. It felt like the right moment to look back at where we started, what we’ve learned, and why the things we decided on day one still shape every course we run.
Where it started
Neither of us came to training from a classroom. Rich built his experience the hard way, running a mobile detailing operation where every job had to be right first time, in whatever conditions the day threw at him. Ian ran his business from a unit, refining processes on everything from daily drivers to modification and customisation. Between us, we’d seen the industry from both ends — and we’d both seen how much bad information was circulating as fact.
When we founded UKDA, the UK had plenty of product-led “training” – a day spent being sold a brand under the banner of education. What it lacked was genuinely independent, professional car detailing training: courses built around technique, chemistry, safety and business reality, not around whichever bottle was on the shelf that month. That gap was the reason UKDA exists.
The decisions that defined us
Some of the choices we made in 2016 raised eyebrows at the time. Ten years later, they’re the things people most often say made the difference.
Training on dedicated vehicles, not your own car or a customer’s. From the first course, we’ve used our own training vehicles rather than asking attendees to learn on their pride and joy. It means you can push techniques to the point where you actually understand the limits — where a polish stops correcting and starts cutting, what a genuine mistake looks like and how to recover it — without the fear of consequences. You learn more when the stakes are on us, not you.
Brand-independent, always. We’re not owned by, sponsored by, or tied to any product manufacturer. We teach the why behind the chemistry so that our graduates can evaluate any product on its merits for the rest of their careers, long after the market has moved on. We do run course on behalf of some manufacturers – but these are ring fenced, and selected to allow us to apply our philosophy to the training, not just operate brand sales events.
Practitioner-led, start to finish. Everything we teach has been done, commercially, by the people teaching it. Detailing is a craft, and crafts are passed on by people who practise and perfect them.
What ten years has taught us
The industry we trained people for in 2016 barely resembles today’s, and the tools, processes and techniques are constantly evolving. Ceramic coatings went from exotic to expected. Machine polishing tools transformed. Electric vehicles brought new materials, new sensors and new risks. Training expanded well past cars- our work now spans motorcycles, marine and aircraft, in tandem with valeting within lesser expected parent industries.
Through all of it, one lesson has held: fundamentals outlast fashions. Products change every season; an understanding of paint systems, surface chemistry and safe process doesn’t. That’s why our courses have always been built on principles first – and it’s why graduates from our earliest intakes are still working at the top of the industry today.
The other lesson is about people. The best detailers we’ve trained didn’t arrive with talent so much as curiosity. They asked why until the answer made sense. If that’s you, you’ll fit right in here.
The people who made it
Over 75% of attendees now return within two years for another course – in terms of feedback, that’s our biggest marker, considering our students come from all over the world. We still get contacted by our earliest students when they are unsure of something, and they always get a response to help with whatever situation they’re in.
A training academy is only ever as good as the people who trust it with their careers. To everyone who has trained with us over the past decade – from complete beginners on their first machine polisher to established professionals adding accreditation — thank you. You’re the reason we’re still here, and still enjoying it.
The next ten years
We’re not marking the anniversary by standing still. Over the coming years you’ll see us push further into formal, recognised qualifications for the detailing industry, continue developing our aviation and specialist programmes, and keep doing the unglamorous work of raising standards across the trade.
