About the course
Our 1-to-1 rotary polishing course is a must for any professional detailer. Rotary machine polishing is more than just an essential detailer skill though. It’s the most efficient, the most comfortable, and the most powerful route to the very best finish on vehicle paintwork. Whilst you can achieve fantastic gloss from dual action machines, their very nature is one of uniform marring – called micro-marring – and it’s where the rotary can overachieve when compared to its orbital competitor.
The rotary polisher is the fastest and most capable correction tool in a detailer’s kit, but it is also the least forgiving. At the defect removal end of the scale, direct drive rotation generates heat quickly and removes paint efficiently, so good technique is the difference between a flawless finish and a costly mistake. At the refinement end, otherwise perfect finishes are often marred by hologramming and buffer trails when used incorrectly.
This one-day, one-to-one course gives you a full day with an experienced trainer, focused entirely on you, your current skill level, and the work you want to take on, in order to master the technique and versatility a rotary machine polisher offers.
What you will learn
We start with the fundamentals: how a rotary differs from dual action and forced rotation machines, safe handling, usage and rotary-specific consumables. We look at the technique, what’s achievable and unique to rotary polishing through heat management, attachments and extensions, and warning signs to watch out for.
From there you will move onto real panels, working through paint depth measurement, test spots and choosing the right combination of pad and compound for the job to both cut aggressively and finish to a pin sharp reflection.
The core of the day is technique. You will practise arm speed, pressure, pad angle and section size, and learn how to read the surface as you work so you can manage heat and avoid burning through edges and high points. Once you are cutting confidently, we cover refining and finishing, including how to remove the holograms and buffer trails the rotary can leave, so your work finishes crisp and clear under inspection lighting.
Who is it for?
The course suits working detailers, enthusiasts with dual action experience and anyone who wants the confidence to use a rotary safely on customer vehicles. You will leave with practical skills you can apply straight away and a clear understanding of when the rotary is the right tool for the job.
Machines & equipment
Rotary polishers differ from dual action machines in that: it’s very difficult to make a bad one as the basic design is simple, but there is a difference when it comes to comfort, and things like start speeds, weight, balance and soft start which will make a difference. We have a variety of professional machines available to try and experience, but if you want to bring your own machine to work with, feel free and we will feature it in our sessions so you can get used to the tool you will be using – unless you end up preferring ours…
